LEGNDARY MOUNTAINEERS OF HMI

TENZING NORGAY SHERPA

Tenzing Norgay, (1914-1986) went to Everest as a high altitude porter on the 1935, 1936 and 1938 Expeditions. In 1952, he was a climbing member of the Swiss expedition’s attempt on Everest. With Raymond Lambert he reached 28,200 feet (8595m) in the spring campaign. The following year with Edmund Hillary Tenzing completed the same route, thus making the first successful summit ascent. Born in the village of moyey in the TIBET, raised in Nepal and a resident of India for his life, Tenzing never learnt to read or write, but had an active mind and was fluent in several languages. He spent most of the war years in Chitral. In 1947 he became a sirdar of a Swiss expedition for the first time following a magnificient performance in the rescue of Sirdar Wangdi norbu who had fallen and been seriously injured. He then went to the top of kedar nath – a first ascent.

 
   
 

NOWANG GAMBHU

NOWANG Gambhu has been an instructor at HMI since its very inception in 1954. Shri Gambu served as a Director of field training in may1976. Achievement to his credit are Saser kangri, Nanda Devi, International Ladies Cho-Oyu expedition as an observer Mount Everest, Nanda Devi rathong and others peaks. He is the first person in the world to climb Mount Everest twice. He also as Hony Instructor in the Climbing School at Mt. Rainier USA on numerous occasions.
Shri Gambu was awarded Padma Bhusan, Padma Shree, Arjun Award, Gold Medal (Indian Mountaineering Foundation), Coronation Medal of Queen Elizabeth II, Tiger Badge (Himalayan Club) Hubbard Medal (National Geographical Society), Tenzing Award and Olympic Gold Medal.

   
DORJEE LHATOO

Dorjee Lhatoo served in the ranks of the Indian Army before becoming an instructor of Himalayan Mountaineering and adventure activities. He was the Deputy Director of Field Training of HMI. His achievements in the field of mountaineering includes Nanda Devi, Chhomolhari Mount Everest and other in the Himalayas and Mount Blanc Ehuille vest and others in European Alps. Shri Lhatoo has been awarded Silver and Gold Medal (Indian Mountaineering Foundation), Tenzing Norgay Award, sports Medal of French Sports federation
