Major ND Jayal
(June 54 to March 58)


Maj ND Jayal was one of the pioneers in the country to introduce mountaineering. Among his mountaineering exploits include ascents of Kamet, Sakang, nanda devi. He was also member of Bandar- Punch and Cho-oyu expeditions.
   
Colonel Bs Jaiswal
(March 62 to March 66)

He had been an accomplished mountaineer of Indian Army. He Lead the First successful expedition to Mt. Rathong in West SIKKIM in 1964.
   
Brig Gyan Singh
(March 58 to March 62)

He was the second Principal of the institute. His contribution to Indian mountaineering has been unparalleled. He led first Indian Everest expedition in 1960. He was also the Hony. Director of National Adventure Foundation.
   
Colonel N Kumar
(Jun 66 to Dec 70)

Among the most famous mountaineers of Indian Army, he many successful expedition to his credit like Trishuli, Nanda Devi, Chomolhari. He has also led indo German Indus Boat Expedition and Trishul Ski- Expedition.
   
Lt. Colonel AS Cheema
(Jan 71 to Jan 73)

The fifth Principal of the institute, he was member of first successful Indian Everest expedition 1965. He summitted the Everest and was the first and the only principal to do so. The institute indoor rock climbing wall has been named after him
   
Gp. Capt AJS Grewal
(Jan 73 to May 77)

An accomplished mountaineer, he was member of Everest 1969 and Neelkanth 1961 expedition. He is also Fellow of Royal Geographical Soceity.
   
Gp. Capt AK Chowdhury
(May 77 to Dec 81)

Group Capt Chowdhury has been a name to reckon with. He was member of first Indian Expedition to nanda Devi, Indian Everest Expedition 1960 first successful Neelkantha expedition 1961, second Indian Everest expedition 1962.
   
Brig DK Khullar
(Dec 81 to Aug 85)

His mountaineering exploits include Gorichen(1962), Kokthang North(1964), Leo Pargyal (1967), Dev Ban (1968), Kinnaur Kailash (1973), Jaonli (1977), Mana (1980), Kabru Dome (1982). He was leader of 1984 Indian Everest Expedition and 1987 Indo-British Army expedition to Saser Kangri.
   

Colonel Amit Roy
(Dec85 to May 90)

His mountaineering exploits include Bidhan Peak (1967), gangotri (1975), Gangotri I & II (1976), Raul and Gharol(1977). He has also climbed Mt. Ngaurahoe and Ruapehu, New Zealand.

   
Colonel AK Dutt
(May 90 to Feb 95)

He has had a long association with mountains. His climbing and exploration exploits include exploration of Neora Valley, Everest (1985), Gorichen (1994). He was the Indian delegates to Mountaineering Commission UIAA.
   
Col Hs Chauhan
(Apr 95 to Sep 99)

The eleventh Principal of this institute, his mountaineering career has been quite eventful. He has many successful expeditions to peaks which includes Stok Kangri, Gulab Kangri, Mount blanc (French Alps), Mana Neelkanth, Kabru, nanda Devi East, Gya North, Gorichen,kamet, Abi gamin and Aconcagua (Argentina). He has also been to Indian Army Trans-Himalayan expedition.
   
Colonel Vijay Singh
(Sep 99 to Aug 04)

Colonel Vijay Singh was the twelfth Principal of this institute. His mountaineering career has been quite evenful. He has served as an instructor in High Altitude Warfare School, Gulmarg. He was leader of successful HMI mount Everest Expedition from north 2003 in Which two Climber’s summitted the mountain.
