TRAINING FACILITIES

The institute has the state of the art training facilities which are comparable with the best in the world. It has highly qualified instructors who have climbed many high mountains including Mount Everest and have many first ascents in their names. During field training the institute provide specialized and modern clothing and training equipment.

Glacier where trainer are enriched with practical training on ice, snow and rock craft.

INDOOR & OUTDOOR TRAINING AIDS:
HMI has excellent indoor and outdoor training facilities. The institute’s 50x20’ sports climbing wall is of international standard. It has also got indoor training wall named after the Col Chima the fifth principal of the institute and a well laid out obstacle training area within the institutes complex. Tenzing and Gombu rocks which are located very close to the institute provide practical training to the students on the natural rock faces.

FIELD TRAINING AT BASE CAMP:
Field training of basic advance and MOI courses is conducted at 4380M high Base camp at Chowrikhang in west sikkim. It provides most exciting training spots in and around Rathong Glacier where trainees are enriched with practical training on ice, snow and rock craft.

LIBRARY:
The HMI is equipped with a well stocked library, which has now more than 250 books covering a wide range of subjects mostly mountaineering as also on travel and exploration, astronomy, geology, flora, fauna etc. valuable additions have been contributed from time to time by among others the Swiss foundation for Alpine Research, the German Alpine Club, the French Mountaineering, the Ski clubs of Japan and Canada the Everest Foundation of the U.K. and General Shamsher Jung Bahadur Rana of Nepal. It is equipped with a complete set of Alpine Club and Himalayan Club Journals and also a large number of other Journals presented by Mountaineering Clubs and associates in India and abroad.

AUDITORIUM:
Named after the first Principal of the institute, the Jayal auditorium can accommodate more than 150 students at a time. It is used for lectures, demonstrations and also to show various training films to both students and visitors.
